Can you paint the metal on lighting fixtures

l have two wall sconces that are great looking shape/design wise, but they

look dated because of it is gold/brass color. Can l paint the metal parts

You might want to consider using an antiquing technique for the finish  
coat as well (paint sconce with a dark color after ur primary color has  
dried, then wipe off the high points while still wet -- looks sweet).  
 
You could even go overboard & finish with acrylic accenting using a  
drybrush technique on the high points?

yes you can but use oil based paint.dont use water based on
